Mary Pat Robertson – TikTok post

Hello friends,
Here’s a little fun project for you until we can be together in person again (soon!).
In addition to being a ballet teacher, I have also been an active choreographer throughout my career.  I had a modern dance company, Teamwork Dance, for many years, and I’ve also choreographed over a dozen operas.  Actually, without the horrible events of this spring, Princeton Festival would have been premiering a new production of “La Traviata” in a couple of weeks.  This would have been my third production of that wonderful opera (my first chance at choreographing it featured two dancers you all know well- Mary Barton and Douglas Martin!).
That has been postponed, of course.  But Princeton Festival commissioned me to do something new and fun for this moment in time.  They assigned me some music from last year’s Festival, a brief bit of baroque music by the 17th century French court musician, Jean-Baptiste Lully. They asked me to set a Tiktok Dance Challenge to that music.
So here it is!  I subscribe to some fun Instagrams which have been featuring people using some of their quarantine time to dress up like old classic paintings, so I incorporated that idea, and did the best I could to put together a French court costume from items in my closet.  Not being able to whip up a dress with those big pannier side pieces, I cross-dressed, and came up with a fun men’s court costume:  my Outdoor Voices sweatpants, teaching shoes, Christmas ribbon.
Costumed or not, I hope you can have some fun responding to my Dance Challenge.
